CODE

DIG BEAR, DUG BEAR My final for Code is a sketch based on the Atari video game Dig Dug as a precedence. This game was released in 1982, about the same time I stopped caring about video games. Since we were encouraged to make a game, I thought I should take it old skool. Gametrailers.com called Dig Dug, "One of the sickest games you'll ever play. Ever." I tried to emulate the low-fi graphics and the method by which the protagonist destroys his enemies by inflating them full of air until they pop. Here's a look at the original.

I incorporated the theme for our Boot Camp section, Care Bears, into my version. I started with an image of a care bear and then made it pixelated in Photoshop by reducing the size and then increasing the size. Here is the before & after.

When the man pumps/shoots the bear, it flips the image a few times and then it becomes just the pixelated heart, slowly floating off screen. If I were to add anything to this sketch, it would be audio (though I like the simplicity currently). I was really interested in exploring the aesthetic, not so much score keeping or a win state.

I added the start and stop fragment image that was required by the assignment, and also a transitional image that rejects the harsh lines of our modern world for the fuzzy ones of yesteryear.
